‘Most frugal mum in America’ reveals how she saved $47,000 in just one year

Meet Becky Guiles, she’s the self-proclaimed “most frugal mum in America” and it’s badge she wears proudly.
Becky admits she’s always been cheap but says the arrival of her first son George pushed her to “kick up [her] frugalness to the max”.
“In that first year I was able to save US$32,000 (AU$47,000) and that gave me the ability to be a fulltime mum and I’ve been in that mindset for seven years now,” Becky explained.

Saving up tens of thousands of dollars in a single year is no easy feat, just ask Becky.

From washing dishes in the washing machine to save on water to using newspaper as insulation to minimise her heating bill, Becky’s creativity will shock and impress you.
Yep, you heard us right, Becky washes her dishes in the washing machine.

She was quick to explain the method behind her madness, saying: ”I rinse the food off in the sink and then I just put the dishes in the washing machine right with my clothes.
“The clothes actually soften the dishes going around so nothing gets broken.
“The reason I put my dishes in the washing machine is because it saves money on water, electricity and I don’t want to spend money on buying a new dishwasher or on a plumber.”

Becky reveals another nifty hack that helped her save tens of thousands in that first year and one she continues to practice.
Hailing from Minoa, a town in the state of New York, it snows in the winter time at Becky’s place and she doesn’t waste an ounce of that snow.
She collects buckets of snow and once it’s melted, uses it as water inside the house.

Becky admits she’d usually collect water from the nearby lake, but because it was winter time the lake was frozen.
